If you follow us on Facebook you would know that on Fridays we tend to post tips and tricks about
music and the industry in general, where other times we post music jokes - usually images by Classic FM
(these guys know how to tell witty music jokes).
He he.. See what we mean?
We also observed that the complexity of the joke drove the responses of ‘Likes’ per post and ultimately whether
the joke gets shared or not. This complexity however seemed to be governed by whether the joke contained music
theory jargon. In many cases where it did, the ‘Likes’ would hail from either literate musicians;
music aficionados or those who at least pretend to be in the know.
Well then, if you find yourself in the last group, chin up! The next few lessons have been crafted
to give you the necessary skills to genuinely find the humour in these memes.
Here's a short story of mine. Hardly 2 years ago I was in your exact position! My knowledge of music theory was ranging from non-existent
to ridiculously pretentious. I would see these jokes on my Facebook timeline, then quickly pore over the commentary hoping
to find clues to demystify the joke and only then perhaps chuckle - if ever. I really wanted to join in on the
esotericism of the culture, but repeatedly failed at deciphering the joke. Those rare moments I managed to
understand the joke, the effort of decoding would usually wear out the amusement of the meme.
It was a hopeless scene I tell you. Hopeless!
So, I decided to learn a bit of music theory. I picked up a Dummies book and in 2 weeks learnt all the basic
concepts to start throwing around music terms in conversations and even make up a few jokes of my own.
Yupp, you read right. 2 weeks was all I needed to grasp the fundamentals. In fact, I think you need far less
learning time. Simply because I intend to share with you the knowledge without the jargon that musicians sometimes
use to intentionally confuse. Yupp! Trixy creatures musicians are. He he..
So in the next few weeks, I will be sharing quick text lessons to get you from a novice to a well-rounded music
humour connoisseur [insert a huge grin here!!]
This here is probably one of the most widely distributed music memes on social networks. Yet if you can’t read it now,
FOMO not, we have you covered. In no time, you’ll be sharing these like a proper muso-pro!
To kick things off, let’s discuss rhythm..
If you would like to have these lessons in video format, do let us know (:
